About Deutsche Lufthansa
Deutsche Lufthansa AG is the largest German airline and a founding member of the Star Alliance. With its central hubs at Frankfurt and Munich airports, the premium airline operates a global route network. It is the most important airline in the DACH region, particularly for business travelers and feeder flights, but regularly struggles with rotation delays and the consequences of strikes in dense airspace.

Flight delay with Lufthansa: Your rights to compensation
When am I entitled to compensation for a Lufthansa delay?
You are entitled to compensation from Lufthansa if you reach your final destination with a delay of at least three hours. The decisive factor here is the exact time at which the aircraft reached its parking position at the destination airport and the first door was opened for disembarkation. If your Lufthansa flight exceeds this time limit, the protection of the European Passenger Rights Regulation applies. The only prerequisite for compensation is that you checked in on time and that there were no extraordinary circumstances.
How much compensation can I get from Lufthansa in the event of a delay?
In Germany, the regular statutory limitation period of three years applies to asserting claims for compensation against Lufthansa. This period begins at the end of the year in which your flight problem occurred. For example, if you are affected by a Lufthansa delay in 2026, you can still assert your rights until December 31, 2029. Nevertheless, we recommend that you submit the case quickly while the travel documents are still available.

When does Lufthansa not have to pay compensation in the event of a delay?
If there are demonstrably extraordinary circumstances, Lufthansa is exempt from the obligation to pay compensation. These include extreme weather conditions, unforeseeable security risks, natural disasters or strikes by airport staff. Important for you: Technical defects on the aircraft or strikes by Lufthansa’s own pilots and flight attendants fall within the airline’s sphere of risk. In these cases, you are entitled to the statutory compensation in full, even if the airline initially denies this.

Flight cancellation with Lufthansa: Compensation and refund
When am I entitled to compensation for a cancelled Lufthansa flight?
If your Lufthansa flight is cancelled less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, you are entitled to compensation of between €250 and €600 under EU law. This only does not apply if the airline offers you prompt alternative transportation that gets you to your destination at almost the same time. Regardless of compensation, you have a choice in the event of any cancellation: Lufthansa must either refund you the full ticket price or rebook you free of charge onto the next possible flight – or, for domestic flights, onto a Deutsche Bahn ticket.
What is the difference between compensation and a ticket refund from Lufthansa?
These two legal claims are completely independent of each other and can be asserted by you in parallel. Compensation serves as a flat-rate payment for damages for the time lost and the inconvenience caused by the cancelled flight. A ticket refund, on the other hand, ensures that you get back the money for the transport that was not provided if you do not take the flight or have had to arrange an alternative yourself. You can therefore demand your ticket money back from Lufthansa and at the same time claim up to €600 in compensation.
Should I accept a rebooking by Lufthansa?
If Lufthansa offers to rebook you to get you to your destination, you can accept this. Using alternative transportation does not usually reduce your claim to statutory compensation. However, caution is advised if you are offered travel vouchers in the app or at the counter. The small print often hides a clause by which you waive further financial claims. You are not obliged to accept vouchers and can insist on a payout.

Missed connecting flight because of Lufthansa: What to do?
If you have booked a flight with several legs via Lufthansa, even a minor delay on the first leg can cause you to miss your connecting flight. Provided all flights are under a single booking number and you reach your final destination with a delay of three hours or more, you are entitled to statutory compensation. In addition, Lufthansa must rebook you free of charge on the next available connection and provide you with adequate catering during the waiting time.
Overbooking with Lufthansa: Rights in the event of denied boarding
To avoid empty seats, Lufthansa regularly overbooks flights – especially on busy business routes within Europe. If you are denied boarding at the gate against your will, even though you checked in on time, you are immediately entitled to statutory compensation of up to €600. In addition, you have the right to choose between an immediate ticket refund or alternative transport to your destination, as well as comprehensive assistance on site.
When does Lufthansa not have to pay compensation?
No claim in the case of genuine extraordinary circumstances
Lufthansa is not obliged to pay compensation if the delay or cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s control. These include airspace closures, acute sabotage or terror warnings, natural disasters (such as volcanic ash) and strikes by external staff, for example air traffic controllers or airport security staff.
Lufthansa often wrongly invokes extraordinary circumstances
Airlines often try to fend off justified claims by referring to “technical defects” or “operational problems”. However, the European Court of Justice has clarified: Technical faults on the aircraft and strikes by Lufthansa’s own staff (pilots, cabin crew) are not extraordinary circumstances, but are part of the normal operational risk. Passengers friend checks Lufthansa’s claims in detail for you using weather and flight databases.

Frequently asked questions about compensation from Lufthansa
How long can I claim compensation from Lufthansa?
You can assert your claims retroactively for up to three years in Germany. The period runs from the end of the year in which the flight problem occurred. We recommend checking early on, as Lufthansa archives the data after a while.
What proof do I need for Lufthansa compensation?
Your boarding pass, the booking confirmation and ideally photos of the display board at the airport are important. If you had additional costs for food or a hotel, keep all receipts carefully for reimbursement of consequential costs.
What happens if Lufthansa rejects my claim?
Do not be discouraged by standard rejections. Passengers friend checks the rejection on a sound legal basis. If necessary, we hand the case over to our specialized partner lawyers and sue for your claim without any financial risk for you.
Can I also claim compensation from Lufthansa as a business traveler?
Yes, according to the EU regulation, the right to compensation always belongs to the traveling person who suffered the loss of time – not the employer who paid for the ticket. Differing internal company regulations must be checked individually.
