Has your airline rescheduled your flight at short notice?

If your flight has been rescheduled, you are entitled to compensation!
It is a very common situation: you have organised your perfect trip and then the airline reschedules the flight at short notice – extremely annoying!

Passengers friend will help you claim your compensation of up to 600 Euro. German Federal Court grants you the right and Passengers friend will effect your claim with the minimum work.

When is the airline liable to compensation for a rescheduled flight?

Compensation is due when:

  • The airline has not notified its customers of a change fewer than 14 days prior to departure
  • Between the 7th and 14th day prior to departure the airline does not offer its customers an alternative flight within a window of less than two hours before, or four hours after, the original schedule
  • Between the 1st and 7th day prior to the planned departure the airline does not offer its customers an alternative flight within a windows of less than one hour before, or two hours after, the original schedule

The amount of compensation in case of a rescheduled flight

The amount of the compensation in case of a rescheduled flight depends on the distance between the airports of departure and arrival:

  • up to 1500 km: 250 Euro
  • from over 1500 to 3500 km: 400 Euro
  • more than 3500 km: up to 600 Euro

Any claim for compensation for a rescheduled flight can be asserted if the flight departs from an airport in an EU country. When departing from a third-country airport to an airport in a Member State of the EU, the amount of compensation can be paid as long as the flight has been performed by an EU airline. Moreover, the regulation applies to airports of the non-EU Member States Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.

Rescheduled Flight

When does the airline not pay a compensation payment for a rescheduled flight?

In some cases of flight rescheduling the airline is not obligated to compensate its customers. All airlines are allowed to change flight itineraries up until 14 days prior to the flight date. If this is not the case, ‘extraordinary circumstances’ have to prevail.

This term includes external occurrences such as bad weather, political instability, pilot and/or air traffic controller strike. In these cases the airline is not responsible for the change of itinerary and therefore not liable to compensation.

Passengers should nonetheless carefully check the airline’s explanation when receiving notification of a schedule change that is due to extraordinary circumstances. Passengers friend will be happy to help you with this!
