You have these rights in the event of a flight cancellation:
According to the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation No. 261/2004, you as a passenger have the right to compensation if you are affected by a flight delay or cancellation.
If your flight is canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to:
- A refund of the fare.
- A return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest possible time.
- Re-routing to your final destination under similar travel conditions.
You are entitled to the following compensation:
In the event of a flight cancellation, the compensation of up to €600 depends on the flight distance.
It is also important in which country the plane departs from and whether it is a European airline.
While you are waiting at the airport, care services are part of the compensation that you must receive in addition to the compensation in the event of a flight cancellation. These are particularly important for passengers if they have to wait a long time for a replacement flight or are stranded at an airport because their connecting flight has been canceled.
Statutory care services
- From a waiting time of 2 hours and a flight distance of up to 1,500 km, you are entitled to free drinks, food and communication services.
- From a waiting time of 3 hours and a flight distance of between 1,500 km and 3,500 km, you are entitled to free drinks, food and communication services.
- From a waiting time of 4 hours and a flight distance of 3,500 km or more, you are entitled to free drinks, food and communication services.
- If your flight departs the next day, you are entitled to an overnight stay in a hotel and reimbursement of the transfer costs, regardless of the flight distance.
Requirements for flight cancellation compensation
A few conditions must be met for you to be entitled to compensation from the airline. If you were not informed of the flight cancellation at least 14 days before departure, you are entitled to compensation. This applies under the following circumstances:
- Landing in the EU with an EU airline (airline based in the EU) or take-off in the EU (regardless of the airline)
- There are no extraordinary circumstances.

Flight cancellation due to exceptional circumstances
If your flight is canceled due to extraordinary circumstances, you are unfortunately not entitled to compensation. However, these circumstances do not release the airline from its obligation to provide care.
The following reasons fall under extraordinary circumstances:
- Extreme weather
- Strike
- Terror warning
- Bird strike
- Natural disasters
- Emergency landings
