You have these rights in the event of a flight detour
Sometimes flights are diverted and have to land at another airport with a delay.
If you arrive at your original destination at least 3 hours late, you are entitled to compensation of up to €600 per person under the EU Passenger Rights Regulation.
The arrival time at the original destination is relevant when calculating the delay.
The amount of the reimbursement depends on the flight distance:
- For flights with a distance of up to 1500 km, you will receive compensation of up to 250 euros.
- For flights with a distance of 1500 km – 3500 km you will receive compensation of up to 400 euros.
- For flights with a distance of 3500 km or more, you will receive compensation of up to 600 euros.
Benefits to which you are entitled in the event of a flight detour:
If the flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you have the right to care services such as meals, refreshments, two phone calls or emails. If the plane lands at another airport, the airline must transport you to your original place of arrival.
If you have to arrange your own alternative transportation, please keep all receipts. You can invoice the airline for your expenses at a later date.

The night flight ban
One of the most common reasons for a detour is the night flight ban. If your flight has been diverted, you are always entitled to alternative transportation to the original airport. This means that the airline must ensure that you reach your destination airport. If the airline does not take care of this, you can book your own transportation to the destination airport.
