Your flight was delayed? Know your air passenger rights, you may be entitled to a compensation payment of up to 600.00 Euro if your flight was more than 3 hours delayed. Your airline is also liable for providing free snacks and refreshments as well as lodging.
All flights departing within EU airspace or carried out by an airline with its headquarters in the EU fall under this regulation.
The amount of compensation depends on the distance:
- up to 1.500 km: 250.00 Euro
- 1.501 – 3.500 km: 400.00 Euro
- more than 3.500 km: up to 600.00 Euro

Air passenger rights regulation
The current regulation (261/2004/EG) entered into force in February 2005 after it was passed by the European Parliament and Council in February 2004.
This regulation applies to all flights that are boarded in the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland, or to flights that are carried out by EU airlines (with EU airports as destination).
Central themes of the regulation are compensation payments in case of:
- Denied boarding,
- flight cancellation and
- long flight delays.
The regulation applies to companies providing scheduled flights, charter flights as well as budget flights.

In case of a flight delay of more than 3 hours you have the right to financial compensation of up to 600.00 Euro. Your airline is also obliged to offer you free snacks and refreshments as well as lodging, depending on the duration of the delay. Exceptional circumstances may not be listed as reason for the delay.

Flight delay due to exceptional circumstances
If your flight delay or cancellation was caused by exceptional circumstances the airline’s obligation to provide compensation is no longer applicable – if there is evidence that events could not be prevented despite having taken all reasonable measures.
Technical defects do not constitute exceptional circumstances, whereas (non foreseeable) safety deficiencies, weather or natural events, bird strike or political instability are valid reasons.
