Flight cancellation: You cancelled your flight?

Customers cannot always board their flights, which is the case with up to 15% of all business flights. But does that mean that the money for the ticket has gone down the drain? We say no, because Passengers friend is able to refund up to 100% of the ticket price. Check now if you are entitled to reimbursement in case of cancellation.

Is compensation in case of flight cancellation possible?

  • If the flight was cancelled at least 48 hours before departure you are entitled to a compensation of up to 100% of the ticket price.
  • If you cancelled your flight less than 48 hours before, you can still get reimbursed for all tax and fees included in the ticket price. This also applies if you do not actively cancel your flight.
  • If you do not board your flight without cancellation you are still entitled to receive compensation for all tax and fees included in the ticket price.
  • This also applies retrospectively for flights for flights of the past 3 years.

CONCLUSION: In case of a cancellation you are in almost every case entitled to be reimbursed for tax and fees, even for flights to 3 years back. A compensation of the full ticket price is possible in many cases. We will check every case individually and free of charge with the help of our lawyers!

Passenger rights in case of flight cancellation or non-attendance

You were unable to board your flight and had to cancel because of health reasons, fear of flights or unanticipated events? From a legal point of view, the reasons for non-attendance are of no importance.

If the airline cannot account for the damages occurred as result of cancellation, Passengers friend will claim the full ticket price for you.

Compensation payments of up to 100% may also be received if tickets or fares were declared as “non-cancellable” or “non-refundable”.

Often customers are put off by high processing fees which are not permitted for refunds (cf LG Frankfurt 06.06.2014, Az. 24 S 152/13; KG Berlin 12.08.2014, Az. 5 U 2/12). The airline has to make refunds without any additional fees or charges.

Since airlines are often slow in processing refunds and are always reluctant in paying money back to you, Passengers friend will handle the negotiations dealing with your flight cancellation.

Claim compensation for tax and fees

Ticket prices comprise flight costs as well as tax and fees. VAT, insurance, kerosene or fuel surcharge, security charges and air traffic tax are considerable factors making up these costs.

You cancelled your flight less than 48 hours before or did not board your flight without prior cancellation (No-Show)? In this case airlines are obliged to refund you tax and fees – because non-attendance does not entail further costs. If cancellation was made more than 48 hours before, you are even entitled to up to 100% of the ticket price.

When do you not have the right to a refund?

  • If the flight was cancelled less than 48 hours prior to departure or was not cancelled at all only tax and fees can be refunded.
  • The right to a refund after a cancellation expires after more than 3 years, which allows Passengers friend to claim your rights in case of earlier cancellations or non-attendance.
